alrighty, i've decided to try doin somethin on a semi-weekly basis (if i can). i dunno if people are gonna pick up on this or not, but i plan to roll with it anyways. i'm gonna try and do some recent purchases and maybe new releases if i can get to them, sometimes i'll just rip out the ol zep or grand funk and go to town on those things. whatever the decision, i'll try my best to keep people entertained as i know most people on the board don't listen to stuff that i do, but most are open to it. anyways....
the choice for what to start with was pretty tough considering the variety and the ammount i listen to. i was gonna go with my most recent purchase in figure four's "suffering the loss", but i decided to take another course and go with my most recently favored album, that being five iron frenzy's "live: proof that the youth are revolting".

why am i starting off with a live album, you say? well, after hearing the songs on the live album and then going back to the studio albums, the live has every advantage to it. they like to improvise on some of the songs, you get a little humor in between and the songs just sound better overall and you can tell by this album that these guys, even though they're jokers, they're no joke with the music.
what style do they play?
these guys are definitely 100% high quality toe thumping ska with a hint of punk and a wee bit of hardcore. though they're labeled as christian ska, the lyrics can often be mistaken for not. heck, i didn't know until i read it somewhere.
why should i like this album?
well, if ya have the slightest sense for light hearted humor, this is the disc for you. also, if you have a weakness for catchy music then here's your chance for the best darn toe-tappin, make-believe-you're-a-drummer and wail out on you're fake horns music.
so.....tell me a lil about the band
five iron frenzy is an 8 piece ska band from the likes of denver, colorado (which you can hear the influence in some of their songs). they've just finished recording their 8th studio album titled "the end is coming" (or near. somethin along those lines) which is appropriately titled because at the end of this year, the band will be no more. it's not due to complications in the band or a lack of creativity, they just feel it's time for them to move on in life. they consult with their pastor every year for guidance and apparently they've been told to look for other things, and so that's what they're gonna do. but fear not posters, because the 2 major vocalists reese and dennis have a side project in brave saint saturn and the style is remotely close, just without the horn section basically.
if you're still here after all that, check this out:
here's a list of the top five tracks on the album for whatever reasons
1. oh canada - just a fun song aboot canada and how good it is. "they say 'eh' instead of 'what' or 'the', that's the mighty power of canada".....good stuff right there.
2. dandelions - quite possibly my favorite song on the album. it's aboot a little boy who's trying to please his mother in the most simple of ways. it almost brings you back to when you were a kid. anyone remember picking the yellow flowers in the backyard and giving them to your mom who's scared stupid of em cuz they attract bees??
3. all that is good - i love this song because the message behind it is that there's always room for improvement when you mess up. it's a good song to keep ya goin. if anything, download this song, i knew it for soo long and just didn't know the name.
4. suckerpunch - ok, so how many of you were that dorky kid in school that kids all loved to pick on?? if that's you, here's a song you can relate to.
and lastly....5. a new hope - being from colorado, when columbine happened, it kinda hit close to home for these guys. so they wrote a song aboot it.
have you ever heard anything like this before??
absolutely not. five iron are definitely a jello of a different flavor. sometimes you gotta look harder into the lyrics than they appear just to get the message and the riffs are definitely different from anything you'll ever hear. this album portrays those two quality's like WHOA.

um, is that it?? i can't think of anything else to write. i hope somebody enjoys this column-y thingy i wrote up here and i REALLY hope it inspires somebody to check these guys out. anyways, until next time......
open your mind, open your ears, turn on radio, turn out the lights and let the music do the rest.

when you're put there on the edge
and the odds you face are life and death
you've got to have the heart of a champion
